English Premier League, KO: 15:00 Aug 31, 2024, Gtech Community Stadium
Our prediction for this Premier League match:
After failing to spoil Liverpool’s party at Anfield, Brentford will be aiming to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they take on Southampton on Saturday afternoon. The Bees defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 in their first home game of the season, which is surely fuelling fans with optimism ahead of Matchday 3. Ivan Toney is on the verge of joining Al-Ahli, while summer signing Igor Thiago remains on the sidelines alongside Josh Dasilva, Aaron Hickey, and Rico Henry.
The Saints, on the other hand, failed to impress in back-to-back defeats to Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest and given their difficulties in front of goal, home win should definitely be considered. In their last meeting in London Brentford rolled over Southampton (3-0), who will be without Juan Larios, Ross Stewart, Adam Lallana, Gavin Bazunu, and Kamaldeen Sulemana in Saturday’s encounter. Talented forward Samuel Edozie is pushing for his first start of the season.
How the bookies view it: Bees to sting Saints
Brentford go into their second Premier League home match of the season as odds-on 3/4 favourites with Gmbet,
Southampton go in search of their first win of the season as big underdogs at 18/5 (William Hill) while all square affair in the capital can be backed at a best price of 3/1 (Gmbet).
Head to head: Saints tend to suffer
Brentford have held the upper hand in this fixture in recent years, having claimed top honours in each of the last three meetings between the pair. Thomas Frank’s team have run out 3-0 winners in each of their last two home games with the Saints. The same scoreline on Saturday can be taken at a tasty 14/1 on 188jili.
Players to watch: Wissa
Yoane Wissa – who finished last season as Brentford’s top scorer – netted against Crystal Palace a fortnight ago, and he looks tempting proposition for a goal or an assist here at 6/4 (Gmbet).
I flagged up Southampton’s Flynn Downes in the foul market last weekend and he duly delivered. The tough-tackling Saints midfielder is a tempting 10/11 to commit two or more fouls on Saturday.
Predicted line-ups
Brentford remain without injured quartet Aaron Hickey, Igor Thiago, Josh Dasilva and Rico Henry.
Southampton boss Russell Martin will be unable to call upon injured trio Adam Lallana, Gavin Bazunu and Kamaldeen Sulemana.
Brentford: Flekken; Roerslev, Collins, Pinnock, Ajer; Norgaard, Janelt, Jensen; Mbeumo, Wissa, Schade
Southampton: McCarthy; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Stephens; Sugawara, Downes, Smallbone, Alcaraz, Walker-Peters; Armstrong, Brereton Diaz
Brentford vs Southampton Prediction
Southampton are not pulling up any trees at the start of the season. They registered just one shot on target in the last weekend’s home game against Nottingham Forest, allowing the rivals as many as nine on the occasion.
The Saints are now winless in four straight matches if we count the pre-season exhibitions. They’ve scored just once in the process.
Brentford have also won each of the last three head-to-head meetings with Southampton. We really like the home win pick at the 1.72 odds.
Alternatively, we will back Yoanne Wissa to score anytime for the hosts at the odds of 3.25. Wissa delivered a goal and an assist in the season opener against Crystal Palace two weeks ago.
